Two of Wands

Robin Wood, Two of Wands
by Peggy Firth, Certified Tarot Master

Where’s number ONE?

Traditionally the number TWO follows the ACE. In playing cards the ace can either be one or eleven.

Rider Waite, Two of WandsThe Minor Arcana cards represent people, their everyday situations and events. These complement the Major Arcana, which deals with the actual life journey. The suit of Wands corresponds to the South direction or Wind, the Fire element and the color Red, the hot summer season. You may see images of burning objects on many of the Wand cards. Couple this with images of passion and desire, partnership, ambitions, creativity, vitality, self-development and growth. The Wands represent forward future-oriented energy that is active and inventive.

Lush greenery in the background represents growth and enhancement. The image of the crossed lilies at the lower right of the traditional Rider Waite deck have the colors red, action/passion and white, virginal. Other images are the heavy stone blocks that signify a good foundation. The mountains in the far background represent knowledge and experience. The caped figure holds the world and seems to be patiently waiting for his ‘ship to come in.’

In numerology the number Two relates to duality, opposites and balance.

Two of Wands – Two is associated with change, inspiration and enterprise.  The suit of Wands inspires us to take action and to be patient as things develop. The perfect opportunity exists to take or control of your life and play up to your strengths.

Positive - Look at the big picture and contemplate your future plans. Apply patience and continue to expect rewards. Consider a partnership.

Reversed - A possible delay in receiving work or new venture. Place more energy in a partnership.

In readings, the suit of Wands is associated with careers, business enterprises and work in general. If a reading brings up several wands it points to career or work-related matters, especially organizational and creative aspects. If you are thinking about launching a new business these are extremely informative cards to draw in a spread. If coupled favorably with some Coin cards, the new venture will be profitable. Often the Wands also indicate the beginning stages of identifying and planning a new course for one's life, usually related to self-development and accomplishment.

Whatever the first impression is (subconscious mind) can be discussed with the querent. Some sample questions to ask; what are your goals, have you considered a partnership, when do you expect to occur, do you feel competent?

Women’s Adversity Issues

Life is often scary and the loss of control is what scares people the most. Many female querents want a Tarot reading to confirm their fears, worries or emotional conflicts. As readers, we cannot heal any of these problems but we can help seek out the unknown or assist in managing these issues. Helping to bolster inner resources gives them a better chance to cope with the dark side of life or the unexpected. Readings should be able to help manage circumstances that can only be done if the issues are understood and acknowledged. Just knowing all of the ramifications of a problem helps to alleviate fear or worry.
Older women are often expected to nurture and take care of their family problems. However, micromanaging family life is a waste of energy and often annoying to those concerned. Karma refers to an individual’s life purpose. If we attempt to assist another individual we often interfere with a person’s Karma.

An easygoing autonomy is a new experience for women. The new freedoms for women allow for them to make choices that were not socially acceptable in the past generations. The older woman has achieved a sense of mastery, a gut feeling of knowing what is right. In past generations we felt compelled to seek out voices of authority…remember when the male doctor was considered all knowing?

In older age, women often move from a passive role to an active mastery role. Across many cultures and with age, women become more authoritarian, effective and less willing to trade submission for security. You can explore these issues with your querent.

If your querent is mired in doubt, insecurity or has experienced loss, you can ask questions that help her to explore proactive measures. Remember, we never tell the querent what to do. We may offer suggestions such as, “have you considered….”
