Tarot and Exploring Karma

by Peggy Firth, Certified Tarot Master

Temperance, X!V, Tarot and KarmaI’ve heard this earth plane referred to as the “Plane of Maximum Karmic Opportunity.” If you believe this to be so, then, as a reader, you will be careful not to enable your client in any way. Your client has work to do in this lifetime, whether it be good or bad. You’ve probably heard of the term “old soul” referring to one who has come to serve, to be challenged, suffer or endure something painful. Some believe that the lives we design, before we are born, may be fraught with seemingly tough challenges or we may return to serve another or others. Young souls create the most havoc and should not be judged too harshly. Remember, you were once a young soul.

Karma comes from Indian Sanskrit and refers to action, performance or deed. The philosophies of Buddhism, Hinduism and many other old religious beliefs believe that karma causes the entire cycle of cause and effect. In this system, the effects of all deeds are viewed as actively shaping past, present, and future experiences. A person is responsible for his or her own karma. Interfering with a person’s karma, such as enabling an addictive personality to persist with no recriminations, only extends the addiction. A person may have to return to work out the addiction.

The idea of a male God who doles out punishment or random acts that affect us adversly has been replaced with the concept of karma. We create our own karmic lives with the help of higher beings between lives. Viewing life, in all of its forms, as an opportunity for karmic growth, will ultimately save you from having to repeat lives.

As a reader you may want to explore the purpose(s) or the larger picture of your client’s life. They may come to you with blinders on and may not be able to see the larger picture. Most people are not aware or in touch with their Higher Self or super-conscious mind or may only receive an occasional insight. Some people are so obsessed with the material that they go years or life times without fulfilling their purpose for being on this earth plane. Often the Higher Self may have to create a karmic opportunity in the form of an accident or illness. Those who have suffered cancer and survived have spoken of the benefits as well as challenges that they have experienced. Those who have had an out of body experience, (OOB), due to a sudden death of the body and returned, speak of the true meaning of life. Such an experience often creates a whole new outlook on life.

The Hermit, IX, Tarot and KarmaThe philosophy of karma throws a whole new light on our mind’s ability to create everything we experience. Karma precludes seemly accidental or random occurrences which we actually create. If you think about all of the challenges you have overcome you will become aware of your karmic opportunities. You may not be able to fathom your past lives and how they affect your present life but you can begin to live life with a more careful approach to karmic outcomes either in this life time or another.

Some metaphysical teachings regard the The Major Arcana as a source of understanding when divining karmic solutions. The archtype characters and imagery refer to situations, events and considerations that clarify the dynamics of one’s life. Further study of the spiritual concepts contained in the Major Arcana is helpful and useful.

In the next few months I will attempt to describe how each card of the Major Arcana has been used by metaphysical organizations such as The Builders of the Adytum, students of the Kabbalah, and the Golden Door as a resource for understanding individual karmic law.
