Three of Cups
Rider Waite Three of Cups
by Peggy Firth, Certified Tarot Master

Robin Williams Tarot Deck,
Three of Cups
|
The Minor Arcana cups are associated with water since water takes the shape of its container. Likewise love takes on the emotion(s) associated with its recipient. Water is also associated with mood, fantasy and personal growth. Cups represent the journey of emotional development we endure through life, its ups and downs, yet it appears positive in the upright position.
Three females raise their cups in celebration of fulfillment and joy. They are dressed in flowing garments with flowers in their hair. In the traditional Rider Waite deck they are also surrounded with flowering bushes. The colors of their garments, red, blue and yellow represent the alchemical elements for the development of a strong personality. Such a personality suggests how one may achieve happiness through the feelings of joy and love. Those who possess a weak personality allow for others to rule and feel put upon. The design of the moon on these cups speak of temporary or cyclical situations that bring joy. We celebrate special occasions in our lives such as graduation, pregnancy, marriage, etc., with our friends and loved ones but these occasions are often few and far between. Perhaps this card reminds us that we should appraise our life and celebrate more often.

The number three in tarot and spiritual teachings speak of fulfillment or the result of accomplishment. The three women dance in a circle and are equal. Women in general represent loving and nurturing rather than aggression and competition. Some decks show pumpkins and squash and other harvested items, the fruit of work and love. Symbolically these images represent the energies of all of the positive and loving emotions that strengthen, enlarge and give us joy.
Reversal – Since there are over a dozen ways to process a reversal of this card, a reversed position may have many meanings that fit the querent’s story. Generally there is some event or feeling of loss or nostalgia. Perhaps one has grown disenchanted with a partner or has outgrown a friend. Spiritual teachings refer to the changes we are to experience in this lifetime and holding onto a relationship or situation that no longer serves our growth may create havoc. |
Tarot Tips
Reading the Tarot for a new querent is a challenge especially if you are dependent upon the cards for enlightenment. There are ways to discover personality types that make a reading more enlightening and enjoyable using simple methods.
One of the ways I find easy and fun is to refer to bodies of water to assist me in identifying the characteristics of a person. I ask what kind of body of water is most soothing, exciting or terrifying. Preference for such bodies of water as ponds, creeks, rivers, lakes, oceans and activities that revolve around them often reveal a personality type. For example, I may ask my querent if they prefer a river to an ocean. If they prefer an ocean it tells me that my querent is more likely to be a risk taker and enjoy more exciting activities. If the querent prefers a pond it tells me that I should not delve into areas that might frighten or seem too risky. Of course we have to take many other visible and invisible aspects of the querent into consideration.
A Tarot reader is most often very saavy as a reader of the human situation. However, unless you are a trained psychotherapist you should not impose your will or ideas on a client. A tarot reader may cause long term damage to a person's psyche if the querent has a weak personality or takes advice too seriously. Tarot readers are considered entertainment so it's best to be the best listener you can be and ask questions that allow the querent to consider there own actions and behavior.
